Assessment
Final state assessment
The final state assessment checks that students’ learning outcomes meet the state standards of general secondary education.
General information
The assessment is taken by students completing primary education (grade 4) and basic secondary education (grade 9). It covers subjects from the invariant part of the standard curricula.
Results are graded on the 12-point scale according to the general assessment criteria. Assessment marks are recorded separately from annual marks.
The results are entered into the certificate of basic secondary education (grade 9) and the certificate of complete general secondary education (grade 11), and count towards the average mark and towards candidacy for a gold or silver medal.
How the assessment is held
In primary school
The assessment covers Ukrainian (language and reading) and mathematics. Marks are based on final tests.
In basic school
Students are assessed in Ukrainian (dictation), mathematics, geography, biology and a foreign language or another humanities subject chosen by the school.
In senior school
It covers Ukrainian (written summary), the specialised subject (or a choice of History of Ukraine or mathematics) and one optional subject.
Exemption from the assessment
The following categories of students are exempt from the final state assessment:
- For health reasons — if the person has a condition listed in the official register of illnesses that may be grounds for exemption, confirmed by a medical board certificate.
- Students taking part in international sports competitions or contests held during the assessment period.
- Participants in training camps for international olympiads, tournaments and contests — they receive an annual and assessment mark of “12” in the relevant subject.
- Participants in international olympiads and contests, winners of stage III and participants of stage IV of national olympiads.
