Nutrition standards for different school ages

During a 5–6-hour school day a student spends about 600 kcal — more than a quarter of their daily energy expenditure. Meeting the appropriate nutrition standards is therefore essential for physical development, health and performance.

The menu is drawn up according to the standards approved by Resolution No. 305 of the Cabinet of Ministers. The standards take age into account — separately for ages 6–10 and 11–18: older students need more energy and protein, so their portions are larger.

What this means in practice:

  • vegetables and fruit are on the menu every day;
  • dishes are boiled, stewed or baked — deep frying is prohibited;
  • salt and sugar are limited; sweet fizzy drinks are excluded;
  • the menu always includes dairy, meat or fish, grains and bread.
